THUNDER ARE HEADING EAST – 2 CAMPS IN TORONTO AREA AUGUST 22nd AND 23rd

After a successful opening season in BC that was highlighted by five camps on Vancouver Island, a two day pre-tournament camp at Shawnigan Lake School and a two day tournament at UVic – the Thunder are coming East. Thunder Coach and National team player, Phil Mack, and Program Director John Lyall will put on two camps in the Toronto area aimed at growing rugby among Aboriginal youth. A Friday afternoon camp will be held at the Oakville Crusaders club and a Saturday camp in Ohsweken which is the central portion of the Six Nations reserve.

“We want to see Aboriginal youth rugby grow across the country, a couple of long term goals are to have rugby 7s as part of the next Indigenous Games, and also to identify Aboriginal athletes who could reach the elite level and follow in Phil’s footsteps. It made sense to build off the energy we had created in July and a window of opportunity presented itself for Toronto in August” explained Program Director John Lyall. “We had a parent from Toronto at the Shawnigan Camp who is very active in Aboriginal sports and the Right to Play organization, she has been a great help in organizing the Ontario trip. Also Shawnigan Lake School has been immense in helping to fund the trip. There’s a small window of opportunity to have a national team player like Phil Mack available, so we’re lucky to have everything lineup.”

The August 22nd Friday afternoon camp will be held at the Oakville Crusaders club, although specifically aimed at Aboriginal youth it will be open to all youth in the area. It’s a chance to learn from one of the nation’s best 7s players and an international level scrum-half. There will be a BBQ social afterwards and a chance to network with those interested in moving Aboriginal youth rugby forward in Ontario.
